The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is even better than its predecessor.

The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is even better than its predecessor.

After around 120 tests, I should know pretty well what I like and what I don't like about gaming headsets. Cable? Ugh! Open design? Meh!

But the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro proved me wrong and brought me back to a natural sound experience.

The result? During the test, I listened to music more actively as a hobby and immersed myself more deeply in games than usual.

For anyone who wants to read this article, I would like to say that this is not going to be a short test. This product is too important, too big, too wow and… too expensive!

With a recommended retail price of around 300 euros, Beyerdynamic is raising expectations for the wired MMX 330 Pro. In our test, we will clarify whether the price is justified and whether pleasant music listening and gaming are really achieved for a recommendation at this price.

Transparency notice: Beyerdynamic provided me with both the prototype and the final MMX 330 Pro for testing free of charge. The manufacturer had no influence on the content of the article and was not given access to it before the test was published. There was no obligation to provide a test report.

Listen to everything again – even old classics!

After putting them on for the first time, I listened to my current test playlist as usual. But instead of taking a break, I carried on straight away.

I had to listen to each favorite song again. The question always in the back of my mind was: What will XY sound like with the new headset?

I started innocently with Amon Amarth and actually only wanted to hear one or two songs. But then it turned into whole albums, followed by old Arch Enemy songs, Brujeria, Bloodywood, Kataklysm, but also Lady Parts, Audioslave and many others.

Which then made me completely immerse myself in music: Live concert broadcasts, such as the grandiose performance of Black Label Society with In this river 2006 in Paris or Iron Maiden with Fear of the dark in Dortmund or Lynyrd Skynyrd or or or. Goosebumps!

I felt like I was actually there live and was emotionally moved by various pieces for the first time in many years.

However, the device stumbled a little with the Band Tool and the song Stickfist. This is due to the following:

The headset has an open design. This means that the bass has less pressure and is less multifaceted. In addition, this is exactly what Tool is aiming for: multifaceted, varied bass. This band also presents a challenge for many devices.

Do I wear the headset or does it wear me?

The ear pads are quite thin. Their round shape and size mean that your ears won't get stuck and the velour cover is breathable, so you won't get sweaty underneath even in hot temperatures.

And speaking of listening to music for hours with over-ear headphones in the middle of summer, the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is probably the most comfortable gaming headset I've ever worn, even though it's not exactly light at 318 grams.

The open design not only ensures an extremely natural sound, the pressure is also maintained.

I usually take my headphones off every now and then while working or playing to let some air reach my ears and because the need simply arises over time.

The head arch cover can be opened and removed using four simple snap fasteners.

This allows us to replace the parts when the wear and tear material eventually gives way. Beyerdynamic offers replacement parts for this.

But I had the MMX 330 Pro on my ears and at some point I didn't even notice it anymore. I was much more focused and more immersed in the action when playing after work than ever before.

Thirsty on the long leash

At the The Hu-Listening, I then noticed something that bothers me about the headset: the cable. I want to get up and jump around when I hear The Hu – but the leash holds me back.

Even if only partially: The removable and therefore replaceable cable is still nice and long at 2.5 meters and allows a certain freedom of movement.

The jack cable is 2.5 meters long, removable and split into headphone and microphone cables. If you play on a console, you have to connect the plug to the controller using the included adapter.

Small service tip: If you're switching back from wireless to a wired headset after a long time, you'll need to allow yourself some time to adjust. It's often happened to me that I've simply forgotten the new cable when I suddenly had to get up because one of my cats was up to mischief again.

Matt, black, simple: Sure, the look is always a question of taste, but the MMX330 Pro basically fits into any setup.

Yeah, music is great, but what about games?

You might have guessed: The MMX 330 Pro also delivers mercilessly in games. The sound is very natural and detailed in the gaming setting. Sometimes maybe even too detailed. Somehow it was strange for me to listen to every quiet exhalation of the protagonist in Banishers and how he devotedly scratched his beard.

The occasional pop-up of his spiritual companion was also irritating at times. The headset accentuated the game's sometimes faulty soundscape, but only further demonstrated the quality of the game.

The microphone delivers excellent sound both in meetings and in games with others. It can be muted using a switch on the cable. If you don't need it, you can just fold it up. It is not removable.

In Metal: Hellsinger I fell into a trance within a very short time. With absolute concentration, I sliced my way from hell to hell with the MMX 330 Pro on my head and was able to block out everything around me – something I am actually only rarely able to do.

Counterstrike 2 I remind myself again that I'm just not good at this game – even with the flawless tracking and good microphone of the Beyerdynamic headset.

This is how I tested

I took part in the beta test for the Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro for several weeks in May and then gave the manufacturer feedback. I then used the final headset for about two weeks before it was released. During that time I wore it for office work, listened to music, watched series and other videos, and took part in team meetings and other voice chats every day. I played with it after work and on weekends. This included many smaller indie titles, the action adventure Banishers, a few rounds of Counter-Strike 2, and the rhythm shooter Metal: Hellsinger.

The Beyerdynamic MMX 330 Pro is my favorite open, wired gaming headset in 2024. I have rarely enjoyed wearing a device for so long and was even able to experience my favorite music in a completely new way. When playing, I always felt well informed about everything around me and was able to immerse myself in it.

During longer meetings, however, I could feel the cable now and again and the bass was not perfect in rare cases. Apart from these minor things, I was completely satisfied with the MMX 330 Pro and can recommend it to a wide range of gamers despite the RRP of around 300 euros.
